FEM is an integral part of Ship Design Analysis these days which ensures the designed structure is safe and optimized to withstand the various global and local loads that it will encounter during its lifetime.
Usually, a 3D model of the ship or other offshore structure under consideration is generated using a designed software and then exported to a FEM platform, for example, ANSYS or other commercial and/or in-house software. Optimization and structural strength analysis is then performed by calculating various types of stresses, displacements through a trial and error process.
A few of my students worked/working with both global and local structural analysis of ships and various other offshore structures, mostly using ANSYS. [images are used for illustration only]
